Wayne County (MI) Community College flexed its offensive basketball muscles putting six players in double figures to walk away with a 102-76 win at Lorain County Community College on Saturday evening, December 30, ending the Commodores’ 12-game win streak.

Wayne County — now 5-2 in NJCAA D-II — was led by sophomore guard Juwan Hampton with 20 points and sophomore guard Tyrell Hearndon with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The team shot 57.8 % for the game compared to 37% for the Commodores.

The Commodores were paced by sophomore guard Jake Schultz’ (pictured)18 points on 5-of-10 shooting — including 3-of-5 three-point shots — plus three assists, a rebound and a steal.   Sophomore forward Daniel Lott added 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting plus four rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot.  Also in double figures were sophomore guard Kevin Kelly and freshman guard Montez Day with 11 points each.  Kelly made half of his 10 shots and grabbed five rebounds, four steals and two assists.  Day made 4-of-7 shots along with a game-high five steals plus four rebounds and two assists.  Freshman forward/center Jovon Jones led LCCC in rebounding with 7.

“They capitalized on our mistakes, played hard and played well as a team,” Head Coach Marty Eggleston said of Wayne County.  “It’s not that we lost; it’s how we lost. We didn’t have the fire tonight; it was a lesson learned,” Eggleston added.

Wayne County opened a 10-point lead at the 11-minute mark of the first half and extended it to 13 by halftime, 45-32, matching LCCC’s lowest first-half point total of the season.

After falling behind by 20 points, 79-59, with 6:41 to play,  LCCC went on a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to 11 at 80-69 with 4:21 remaining.  However, Wayne County scored the next seven points and closed the game on a 22-7 run.

LCCC will have an 11-day break before hosting Cuyahoga CC — the top-ranked NJCAA D-II team in the country — on Wednesday, January 10, at 7:30 p.m.
