Women’s Varsity Softball
Bill Matthews took the position of LCCC Head Softball Coach for the 2019-20 season, just in time for COVID-19 and the suspension of two seasons due to the pandemic. He is looking forward to getting back on the diamond with the team in 2021-22.
Coach Matthews joined LCCC after a 33 year coaching career as the head varsity softball coach at the high school level, including 29 years at Amherst Steele High School and 3 years at Vermilion High School. In that time, he amassed 526 career wins (526-260) and was named Northeast District Coach of the Year twice, Southwestern Conference Coach of the Year seven times, and was named Lorain County’s Division II Coach of the Year in 2019. He is one of just a couple dozen Ohio high school coaches who’ve reached the 500-win milestone and his 526 wins are second in Lorain County. Matthews earned the Northeast Ohio Sportsmanship/Ethics Award in 2005 and was inducted into the Ohio Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. He has directed the OHSFSCA State Coaches Clinic for 18 years.
Coach Matthews became a softball head coach for the first time in 1981, while completing Student Teaching while attending Miami University, at Ross High School in Hamilton, OH. Matthews also coached football for 14 years, wrestling for 13, and track for two.
In 2019 Matthews retired from teaching after 38 years (35 in Amherst, three in Toledo). He is a long-time resident of Amherst, OH with this wife, Valerie, and son, Adam.
