Our Commodore Kids program offers a full spectrum of expert care and learning opportunities for your child or teen. In addition to comprehensive childcare, preschool and after-school care, we offer a variety of courses and camps for academic development, personal enrichment, or just for fun.

 

 


 

Children’s Learning Center

LCCC’s Children’s Learning Center is a model early childhood program designed especially for children eighteen months to 12 years old which provides an optimal setting for learning and play. Enrollment is open to children of LCCC and University Partnership students, non-credit students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community.

After-School Childcare

Building on the success of its existing Children’s Learning Center (serving ages 18 months to 5 years), LCCC will offer after school care to strengthen access and support for parent-students attending school by offering after school and evening care for enrolled students with children from kindergarten to age 12. The After School Program helps parent-students reach their education goals while providing their children with LCCC-supported experiences in our Culinary Arts Institute, Stocker Theater, Campana Center for Ideation & Invention, FabLab, and fitness center and field house.

The College for Kids and Teens program provides continuing education courses for children and youth. Our year-round programming gives your child or teen a chance to learn new skills and to explore their interests in an exciting, hands-on environment. We can also develop specialized programs to meet the needs of your group or organization.

Spark Theatre Company/LCCC Performing Arts Camp
Monday through Friday, July 11-22, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Students enjoy classes in acting, music, and dance while working to create their own final performance piece. Additionally, campers get to experience workshops from area professionals in technical theatre disciplines including lighting design, set design, and costuming for a well-rounded theatre experience!

Ages: 6 to Adult

Commodore Kids Tinker Train STEAM Program - Car #1 Deconstruction
July 11-15, 9-10 a.m.

All aboard the Tinker Train!

In this camp student will explore what deconstruction means by taking apart a variety of objects and putting some back together.  By working in groups, they will need to collaborate to create new things and solve problems while using tools that require fine motor skills and attention to safety for themselves and others.

Students will learn names of tools and how to use them correctly.  They will explore how everyday objects are constructed by taking them apart and then use problem solving and recall to put them back together or create something new from the existing parts.

Commodore Kids Tinker Train STEAM Program - Car #2 Construction
July 18-22, 9-10:30 a.m.

All aboard the Tinker Train!

In this camp, students will explore what program construction means while building a variety of different objects. They will gain an understanding of why we may build new things and what goes into that process. They will build a variety of items using different types of tools and use the design process to make improvements to the buildings.  Working together, they will creatively plan and build a city.

Creative Writing
Monday through Thursday, July 18-22, 10-11:30 a.m.

Learn to write amazing mysteries, poems, fantasies, and personal narratives. In addition popular stories by famous children's authors will be read aloud and discussed. Children will learn to write clearly, edit their compositions, and produce a polished final draft. This reinforces many skills needed for achievement tests.

Jump Start Reading
Monday through Friday, July 25-29, 10-11:30 a.m.

This program is designed to provide a review of skills taught in the prior school year and to introduce new concepts to prepare for the start of the new school term. Students will work on reading skills to help with fluency, vocabulary and basic phonics skills. This hands-on class will provide fun activities to help the student get a "jump start" on the new school year!

Gearing Up for Math
Monday through Friday, August 1-5, 10-11:30 a.m.

This class will provide a review of skills already learned the prior school year and an introduction to new concepts to prepare for the start of the new school year. The classes will provide hands-on opportunities to discover that math may not be as difficult as you think. Get a jump start on the new school year!

Programming With Pepper The Robot
July 12-13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This two day summer program is designed for middle school students interested in robotics. It is an absolute beginners course, there is no programming experience needed. Students will learn how to program the world’s first social humanoid robot, named Pepper. Pepper can be programmed to tell a joke, perform a fun dance move, or both!

Parents even get to see the students work at the end of the program when Pepper gives a demonstration.

USTA/LCCC Free Youth Tennis Day
Wednesday, July 20, 9:30-11 a.m.

Join Lorain County Community College and the USTA Midwest-Northeastern Ohio for a morning of tennis instruction, games and FUN! Children ages 6-11 will be able to learn some basics of the great game of tennis. Don’t have a racquet? – We can let you borrow one of ours for the morning! Space is limited! Techie Camps from Tech Corps – FREE

Student Web Corp - High School Earn & Learn Program
June 21 - July 29, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Elyria Campus

Student WEB CORPS presents introductions to many of the basic concepts, issues and techniques related to designing, developing and deploying Websites. During the program, students will work independently and as part of a team to complete assigned tasks and achieve project milestones.

Robotics Camp
June 27 - July 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - LCCC Wellington Center

Students will explore intermediate engineering and programming. They will expand their logical and mechanical thinking skills as they work in teams to design and build the ultimate robot. Students will discover their inner creativity while developing their ability to troubleshoot dilemmas as they interact with the Lego Mindstorms EV3 components.

App Development Camp
July 11-15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Lorain Learning Center at City Center

Students will explore the world of mobile app development and develop a real world app that tackles a real world need or problem. Students will learn about the buildings blocks, UI, graphics, media and sensors to develop an Android cell phone app. Students will end the week with the actual application that they can use on their Android smart phones. They will also be able to share it with their family and friends. The camp will encourage students to learn by building increasingly more sophisticated and meaningful mobile apps for Android phones.

Programming - Video Game Design
July 18-22, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - LCCC Wellington Center

Students will use Unity, a game engine developed by Unity Technologies, to learn the basic concepts of game design. Students will create their own interactive environments in which they will be challenged to discover many of the features of 3D game design. The camp will encourage students to think about complex ideas or complex problems rationally and logically.

These Activities will be available while supplies last and will have a limit of one item per person.
