With an aging workforce, a lack of qualified professionals coming into the field, and a growing need to repair and replace electrical infrastructure, our nation’s utility companies are facing a challenge. They need to find employees who are highly trained and knowledgeable regarding overhead lines and substation technology.
For this reason, FirstEnergy, one of the largest electric utility systems in the country, has partnered with Lorain County Community College to train the next generation of top-quality, well-educated and experienced line workers. Through this program, you may earn one of two Associate of Applied Science degrees and be eligible for employment with First Energy immediately after graduation.
In order to be selected for the program, you must pass a technical evaluation by First Energy and undergo placement testing with LCCC. You’ll also need to successfully complete a background check, a physical capabilities assessment, and a climbing course. If you are selected, First Energy will provide all tuition, fees, books, and protective clothing.
Students with the right grades, skills, and attitude will have the opportunity to be hired by FirstEnergy upon graduation. Your starting job title will be Line Worker Technician and starting salaries range from $18 to $21 per hour, as well as paid overtime.
