The Lorain County Community College Dining Services team has several reasons to celebrate this graduation season – seven reasons, to be exact.
Seven student workers from the Marketplace and Starbucks on campus are graduating on May 13, earning degrees in subject areas from software development to culinary arts.
“Working in the Marketplace has been great. It’s a good job with flexible hours,” LCCC student Ali Tulebayev said. “The job fits well within my class schedule.”
Tulebayev is earning an associate degree in software development. He is originally from Kazakhstan and plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn a bachelor’s degree in information technology or business administration.
Through her job at LCCC’s Starbucks, Stephanie Herndon has been able to quickly gain real-world experience for the concepts she’s learned in her classes. She will graduate on May 13 with an associate of applied business degree in hospitality and tourism management- culinary arts.
“I’ve been working at Starbucks for a year and it’s lined up well with my culinary program,” Herndon said. “A lot of my classes carried over to my job at Starbucks, like safety and food handling.”
She’s also earned several certifications along the way that will help her long after graduation, such as ServSafe and the official Starbucks barista certification. After graduation, she hopes to work at a bakery.
Rebecca McNeal, LCCC’s interim general manager of retail food service, said all the graduating students have been a great asset to the Dining Services team.
“They are awesome workers. I’m so proud of each one of them,” McNeal said.
