In order for you to receive a license to practice dental hygiene in the state of Ohio, you are required to complete the dental hygiene program to receive an Associate Degree of Applied Science in addition to:
- pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBHDE)
- pass the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments-(CDCA) (Clinical Exam)
- pass the CDCA computer-simulated examination
- pass a written jurisprudence examination on the Dental Practice Act, Chapter 4715. of the Ohio Revised Code.
- complete a Criminal Records Check (BCI&I and FBI- the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation),
- complete an Ohio State Dental Board Dental Hygiene licensing application

Accreditations & Partnerships
The Lorain County Community College’s Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of approval without reporting requirements.
The United States Department of Education (USDE) procedures require accrediting agencies to provide an opportunity for third-party comment, either in writing or at a public hearing (at the accrediting agencies’ discretion) with respect to institutions or programs scheduled for review. All comments must be related to accreditation standards for the discipline and required accreditation policies.
Who Can Submit Comments?
Third-party comments relative to the Commission’s accredited programs may include comments submitted by interested parties such as faculty, students, program administrators, Commission consultants, specialty and dental-related organizations, patients, and/or consumers.
How Comments Can Be Solicited
The Commission will request written comments from interested parties in the spring and fall issues of Communication Update. In fairness to the accredited program, all comments relative to the program being site visited will be due in the Commission office no later than 60 days prior to the program’s site visit to allow time for the program to respond. Any unresolved issues related to the program’s compliance with the Accreditation standards will be reviewed by the site visit team while on site. Comments must pertain only to the standards for dental hygiene programs or policies and procedures used in the Commission’s accreditation process. Code of Student Conduct/Academic Integrity Policy
Students are expected at all times to maintain academic ethics and honesty. Within the Dental Hygiene Program, including lecture, college laboratory, and clinical activities, the highest ethical and academic standards are expected.
All course materials are the property of Lorain County Community College.
Cheating or assisting another student who is trying to cheat is unacceptable behavior and may result in loss of all points for the assignment/test or program dismissal for all students involved in the action. Under no circumstances are students permitted to help one another on lecture examinations. Students cheating on any examination, laboratory assignment, or clinical assignment will be subject to disciplinary action. If written answers are too similar from two different students, both students will be disciplined for cheating according to this policy. Students are to complete any course work including examinations independently and in his/her own words!
“Cheating” is defined as irregular behaviors observed by Program faculty that include but are not limited to: copying a classmate’s answers to test questions or laboratory assignments/procedures, allowing a classmate to copy one’s answers to test questions or laboratory assignments, looking at a classmate’s paper during a quiz or exam or giving the appearance of looking around the room during a quiz or exam, falsifying laboratory results in the college laboratory (performing laboratory assignments and clinical assignments outside of LCCC Dental Hygiene program lab/clinic), knowingly not following correct laboratory/clinical procedures or (taking shortcuts), and/or plagiarism.
Quizzes and Exams: Anyone cheating on a quiz or exam will be given a grade of “F” for the course and be dismissed from the program. Sharing information about text/exam content with students who have not yet taken the test or exam is considered cheating and will also result in a grade of “F” for the course and dismissal from the program. Anyone not completing his/her own work in the college laboratory, clinic, or lecture rooms will be given a grade of “F” for the course and dismissed from the program.
Under no circumstances are students permitted to alter any LCCC Dental Hygiene Program class, lab, or clinic forms, grades, and/or submitted requirements.
Under no circumstances are students allowed to complete radiographic lab assignments or clinic procedures outside of the LCCC Dental Hygiene Clinic. Faculty supervision is required when students are participating in any Dental Hygiene Program class, lab, or clinical activity.
Submission of any LCCC Dental Hygiene Program lab or clinical assignment performed elsewhere for requirement completion and evaluation will be denied, and program dismissal will be recommended.
Off campus Clinical Assignments: Anyone lying, cheating, or demonstrating dishonest or unprofessional behavior in any way at a clinical site outside of LCCC will be given an Unsatisfactory (U) clinical grade and immediately dismissed from the clinical site. Program Dismissal will be considered.
Consequences of program dismissal due to academic dishonesty or unprofessional behavior:
If a student is dismissed for academic dishonesty and/or unprofessional behavior from an Allied Health and Nursing program, s/he will be permanently ineligible for re-entry into that program.
If a student is dismissed for academic dishonesty and/or unprofessional behavior from one Allied Health and Nursing program, s/he will be permanently ineligible for entry into any other LCCC Allied Health and Nursing program.
Any student case involving dismissal for academic dishonesty and/or unprofessional behavior from an Allied Health and Nursing program shall automatically be referred to the College’s Code of Conduct process. The student can be temporarily or permanently removed from the classroom, laboratory, and clinical setting pending investigation and resolution through the Code of Conduct. Refer to Student Handbook for Honor Code and College policy.
- If a student is dismissed from an ALHN program or banned from a clinical agency for academic dishonesty, unprofessional behavior, unsafe behavior or code of conduct issues the student will be permanently ineligible for re-entry into that program or any other LCCC Allied Health or Nursing program.
