Choose Ohio First Scholarships at Lorain County Community College
The Choose Ohio First (COF) Scholarship is designed to significantly strengthen Ohio’s competitiveness within STEMM disciplines and STEMM education. The COF program is administered by the Ohio Department of Higher Education. COF scholarships are awarded to first-time LCCC students or existing LCCC students who are new to one of the COF-eligible programs at LCCC.
Choose Ohio First awards competitive scholarship funding to Ohio’s colleges and universities to support undergraduate and qualifying graduate students in innovative academic programs. Designated Choose Ohio First programs are:
- Integrated with regional economies
- Meeting statewide educational needs
- Facilitating the completion of baccalaureate degrees in cost effective manners
- Recruiting underrepresented STEMM student groups including women and students of color
Choose Ohio First funds higher education and business collaborations that will have the most impact on Ohio’s position in world markets such as aerospace, medicine, computer technology and alternative energy. These collaborations will ultimately produce substantive improvements to the pipeline of STEMM graduates and STEMM educators in Ohio. Choose Ohio First is part of a strategic effort to bolster Ohio’s economic strength by ensuring a ready workforce for STEMM-Related industries.
LCCC participates in three Choose Ohio First Programs. By completing the 2022-2023 Choose Ohio First Scholarship Application, you will be considered for a COF scholarship that best aligns with your profile.
Priority Application Deadline is December 16, 2022. The application deadline is January 9, 2023.
Current COF Scholars do not need to reapply.
IMProving Retention and Student Success in Computing (COF-IMPRESS-C) (COF Proposal #19.06)
This program is for students who wish to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Computer Science in Engineering Technology (CSET) or Information Technology (IT). The goal of this program is to address a need in the State of Ohio, for a highly-trained Computer Science (and related fields) workforce with baccalaureate degrees. The project provides financial support and an ecosystem of high-impact curricular and co-curricular activities to increase the success of academically-talented computing students needed to support economic growth for Ohio.
LCCC is proud to partner with the University of Toledo College of Engineering for COF-IMPRESS-C scholarship opportunities. Interested LCCC students should be planning to enter the University of Toledo as part of this scholarship program.

CISS (Computer-Information Systems), CSE (Computer Science Engineering), Computer Maintenance & Network (CMNW) (COF Proposal #19.32)
This program is intended for students pursuing Computer-Information Systems (CISS), Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Computer Maintenance and Networking (CMNW), and related computer-science areas. LCCC’s goals for students participating in the program are to increase student success, increase work-based learning placements, help to address the skills gap in many computer science/IT-related fields found in unfilled in-demand jobs and career pathways, and build a “learning community” around the COF cohorts which holds the potential to improve and enhance retention, persistence, and completion.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, & Medicine (STEMM) (COF Proposal #21.23)
This program is intended for students pursing credentials (degrees or certificates) in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or Medicine (STEMM) related disciplines. The academic programs eligible for a Choose Ohio First scholarship under the 21.23 proposal are lined to career pathways in in-demand fields in Northeast Ohio with opportunities for co-curricular and experiential learning components.
