College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Earn college credit for what you already know.

You can receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any one or more of the 33 CLEP examinations.  LCCC and more than 2,900 colleges and universities in the United States will recognize your comprehensive subject knowledge acquired through independent or prior study, cultural pursuits, special interests and professional development.

Satisfactory scores on CLEP exams can earn you 30 college credits or more–a whole year’s worth of full-time study. The cost to take a 90-minute CLEP exam is $102, which is a fraction of tuition cost.

Who can take CLEP examinations?
CLEP examinations are available to everyone, including LCCC students, high school students and the general public.  This is a great way to get a fast start on your college education or to increase your existing college credits.

CLEP credit acceptance
Each college and university sets its own CLEP policy regarding how much credit will be granted and for what courses. If you are planning to attend a different educational institution, be sure to check with the institution’s admissions office to ensure CLEP credit acceptance.

Note:  LCCC credit will not be awarded for the exams listed below that are marked with an asterisk(*).  Students may receive elective credit for some exams.(**)  In addition, not all exams have a 1:1 alignment with Lorain County Community College courses.  The list of exams is subject to change. If you have any questions, please contact the Transfer Center at 440-366-4074 before you take your CLEP exam.

To Prepare and Learn more about the College-Level Examination Program

Most candidates study on their own for the exams. You should determine if a quick review of the material provides you with sufficient preparation, or if you need to develop a full study plan.

We recommend that you consult a textbook for the course at your college that is comparable to the exam you plan to take.

CLEP Individual Exam Guides

Also, consider purchasing an individual exam guide. These include an outline of the test, sample questions and answers, and tips for preparing to take the exam. You can download the PDFs for $10 each.  They are also available in the LCCC library.
