Alice Lamb lives in a cottage on the seaside cliffs of Southern England in 1940. Alice is a reclusive writer, resigned to a solitary life while World War II rages across the channel. She tolerates the harassment by local children who think she is a witch because she is a loner. As part of the war effort, the brusque recluse is entrusted with the care of a young boy, Frank, who has been evacuated from London. Not having volunteered to host the boy, Alice does not want to care for him as she fears it will interfere with her work researching mythology and folklore. Reluctantly, she agrees to let him stay believing that he has nowhere else to go and she will be able to be ride of him in a week. It’s not long, however, before the two realize they have more in common than Alice had assumed. Heartwarming and compelling, SUMMERLAND tells a beautiful tale of love and hardship.
