Cleveland Guitar Trio, Patrick Woods, Darren Frate and Doug Wood
Cleveland Guitar Trio (formerly known as Guys with Guitars) features three long-time musician friends Patrick Woods, Darren Frate, and Doug Wood. Having built their own solo careers exploring different realms of instrumental music on acoustic, electric and bass guitars, they unite as a trio to provide an energetic guitar-oriented show, featuring a mix of cleverly crafted solo pieces, along with collaborations of original and recognizable cover tunes.
The trio is headed by former Elyria native Doug Wood (who remembers Erie Elementary School?). Doug contributes his contemplative, melody-driven music that can shift from a sweet solo finger-style guitar piece to a composition looping energetic world rhythms. Doug has been featured on numerous prominent radio programs including “Echoes,” “River City Folk,” “Acoustic Cafe” on WNWV, and TV programs like PBS’s “Applause” and NBC-Cleveland Channel 3’s “Live from Lakeside.”
Being more influenced by progressive rock than acoustic music, Patrick Woods has carved out his unique brand of up-tempo driving acoustic instrumentals that are complex enough to be appreciated by advanced musicians, but melodic enough to be enjoyed by the average guitar music lover. His ambitious guitar playing earned him second place in Guitar Players Magazine’s GUITAR SUPERSTAR Competition.
Rounding out the trio is innovative bass guitarist Darren Frate. At 10 years old Darren found his uncle’s bass in the attic (his uncle is Dale Peters from the James Gang), and has been playing ever since. Darren has built a masterful career performing bass for well-known musicians of many genres, from Paul Revere and the Raiders to Jazz guitar legend Mike Stern. Darren’s solo work is reminiscent of bass masters like Jaco Pastorius and Michael Mannring. He is able to create fully orchestrated melodic tunes using foot pedals and looping.
