The Big Band is the jazz version of the Classical Symphony Orchestra. It is the vehicle composers use for their grandest musical statements. The big band compositions of Duke Ellington, Charlie Mingus and others changed the musical landscape of jazz. Tonight we follow the development of the big band, from non-existence, to its standing today as the grandest of jazz ensembles. The musical life of Duke Ellington will be presented, from some of his earliest compositions – “East St. Louis Toodle-oo” and “Cotton Club Stomp” – to his later works, like “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” and “C Jam Blues.”
