Learn More About the College Tech Prep Award

High School Students

Intrigued by technology?  Motivated by hands-on learning?  If you’re a high school student, the College Tech Prep (CTP) program may be for you. You can choose the CTP program as an alternative to your traditional junior and senior years. By doing so, you’ll complete high-level academic courses, which have free college credit connected to them, as well as hands-on, project based technical courses in the field of your choice. Many times, students earn industry-recognized credentials, which when combined with your technical courses, will have you prepared for entrance into the workforce. By the time you finish two years of a College Tech Prep program, you’ll be college bound and career ready. The opportunities for you are endless!

Earn College Credit in High School

Being a CTP student means you’ll have several different ways to earn college credit before you ever leave high school.  Many students earn enough credits to knock out their first semester of college, while others earn enough credits to graduate with their associates degree! First, many of your Tech Prep technical classes will qualify for free college credit through “articulation agreements” between your high school and LCCC or through Career-Technical C-TAG credit, which is an agreement between your high school and all Ohio Public State Colleges and Universities.

Many students also choose to participate in LCCC’s College Credit Plus (CCP) program that allows you to take many General Education courses (such as Math, English, Social Studies, etc.) at the college level – gaining credit toward both your diploma and future associate’s degree. Several Tech Prep programs already embed CCP classes within the technical program (such as Blueprint Reading, AutoCad and Solidworks, or Medical Terminology, just to name a few).

Obviously, getting these credits means you’ll have to meet some specific standards and guidelines for each course – but it’s not all that difficult.  And remember:  you can take these classes for free!   Details are available through your College Tech Prep instructor, your school counselor, or any LCCC CCP Academic and Career Advisement team member!

What Makes College Tech Prep Different?

Because the College Tech Prep Program emphasizes both academic and technical skills, along with work-based learning opportunities, Tech Prep can help you prepare for a bachelor’s degree program, for an associate’s degree program, or for employment immediately after high school.  The choice is yours – but whichever path you choose, your “real world” knowledge and experience will help you move into your career field quickly and confidently. You’ll also have the insight and savvy to make informed career decisions about where you want to go – and how far you want to go – in your professional life.

If you decide to continue your studies at LCCC after completing the Tech Prep program, scholarships may be available to help you pay for tuition, books and supplies. Awards are limited, and you must have at least  2.75 grade point average to apply.  Find out more by contact the Regional Coordinator for Tech Prep at dstrauss@lorainccc.edu or 440-366-7625.
